Extra beveiliging op je smartphone is altijd een ‘lastig’ iets. Aan de ene kant wil je je telefoon zo goed mogelijk beveiligen tegen onverlaten, maar aan de andere kant wil je ook niet elke keer lastige codes invoeren of patronen tekenen. Google heeft nu een techniek gedacht die kijkt naar je locatie en aan de hand daarvan bepaalt hoe ‘moeilijk’ het is om je telefoon, tablet of ander apparaat te ontgrendelen.
Op het moment dat je op bepaalde locaties (thuis, werk etc) vaak met goed gevolg je telefoon hebt ontgrendelt zal het daar vervolgens makkelijker zijn om je telefoon te ontgrendelen. Het patent van Google omschrijft het systeem als volgt:
A location-dependent security method and system for a portable electronic device is disclosed. Without requiring that the user enter any location information, the system determines one or more familiar areas for the device based on locations where the device has received at least a threshold amount of successful user authentication entries. Thereafter, when a user attempts to access the device or an application of the device, the device will implement a first authentication process if the device is in one of the familiar areas, or a different authentication process if the device is not in one of the familiar areas.
Zo op het eerste gezicht klinkt dit als een handig systeem dat het iets makkelijker maakt om je telefoon of andere apparatuur te beveiligen. Al vraag ik me wel af hoe het zit met familieleden, huisgenoten, buren of collega’s die dankzij dit nieuwe systeem gemakkelijker toegang kunnen krijgen tot je gegevens.
Of Google ook daadwerkelijk van plan is om dit systeem te gaan implementeren in Android is nog niet bekend. Google schijnt ook te werken aan een systeem dat aan de hand van de manier waarop je je telefoon ontgrendelt weet welke app er gestart moet worden. (via: engadget.com)
